It was the beginning of the quarter, and the second day of our trip. The short-distance passengers got in and left our carriage, but three others, like me, had gone all the way by train. One of them was a simple lady, but no longer young, and smoked, and had an unpleasant look, as well as a man’s coat and a headscarf, and another was an acquaintance of hers, a talkative man of about forty years old, whose things looked clean and new. The third is a rather short man, but he was aloof. He wasn’t old but his curly hair had turned gray prematurely, his movements were sudden, and his unusually twinkling eyes were moving rapidly from one object to another.
