  • Homer, the legendary ancient Greek poet traditionally credited with composing the Iliad and the Odyssey, is believed to have lived between the 12th and 8th centuries BCE, though little is known about his life, and some scholars debate whether he was a single individual or a name representing a tradition of oral poetry. The Iliad recounts the story of the Trojan War, focusing on the hero Achilles and themes of rage, honor, and fate, while the Odyssey follows Odysseus’ long journey home, exploring perseverance, cunning, and the human struggle against divine and mortal challenges. Both epics, written in dactylic hexameter, are foundational to Western literature and have profoundly influenced culture, art, and thought for millennia, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire adaptations and scholarly exploration today.

الوصف

The Iliad:
The Iliad is set during the final weeks of the Trojan War, a decade-long conflict between the Greeks and the Trojans. It focuses on the Greek hero Achilles, whose rage (menis) drives the narrative. After Agamemnon, the Greek leader, dishonors Achilles by taking his prize, the captive woman Briseis, Achilles withdraws from battle, causing the Greeks to suffer heavy losses. Achilles’ close friend Patroclus is killed by the Trojan hero Hector while wearing Achilles’ armor, prompting Achilles to return to the fight. In a climactic duel, Achilles kills Hector and desecrates his body, though he later relents and allows Hector’s father, King Priam, to reclaim it for burial. The poem explores themes of heroism, fate, the wrath of the gods, and the tragic cost of war.
