Born into a samurai family, he studied medicine in Germany, where he was deeply influenced by European culture and literature. Ōgai's works often explore the tension between traditional Japanese values and modern Western ideas, as well as complex human relationships. His most famous works include The Dancing Girl (1890), a semi-autobiographical story, and The Wild Geese (1911–1913), a romantic novel. He also contributed to Japanese literature by translating European works, bridging Eastern and Western literary traditions. Ōgai's writing is known for its psychological depth and realism. He passed away in 1922, leaving a lasting legacy in Japanese literature.
