  • Hirai Tarō (平井 太郎), better known by the pseudonym Rampo Edogawa ( 江戸川 乱歩), sometimes romanized as "Ranpo Edogawa", was a Japanese author and critic who played a major role in the development of Japanese mystery fiction. Ranpo was an admirer of Western mystery writers, and especially of Edgar Allan Poe. “The Demon of the Lonely Isle” (孤島の鬼, Kotō no Oni) is a 1929 novel by Edogawa Ranpo, blending mystery, horror, and psychological intrigue. It follows Nogima, the protagonist, who embarks on a perilous investigation after receiving a cryptic message from his late friend. This message points to a remote island where strange and gruesome events unfold.

On the island, Nogima encounters twisted individuals, including Kagemasa Madara, a physically deformed man whose cruel actions embody the concept of human evil.
