تدور أحداث هذه الرواية في إطار أسري لعائلة من عائلات النبلاء في اليابان حيث تعيش إحدى الفتيات مع أمها المريضة؛ إحدى نبيلات اليابان، بعد أن كان قد توفي أبوها منذ زمن. وتعاني تلك الفتاة من الشعور بأن أمها لا توليها الحب نفسه الذي توليه لأخيها المغترب الذي يعيش بعيدًا عنهم، ومن ثم تتجدد لديها الرغبة الدائمة في الهرب بعيدًا عن أمها. لكن مرض أمها وصراعها على فراش الموت يؤخر هذه الخطوة ولا يلغيها، ويتزامن ذلك مع عودة الابن للاستقرار في بيت العائلة، بعد أن كثرت عليه الديون بسبب معاقرته للخمر ليل نهار، ثم انتحاره بعد وفاة أمه وتركه وصيته لأخته التي كانت قد رتبت لهروبها للبحث عن رجل يكون سببًا في إسعادها.
